LANTA

First a little background. Early this spring, I was asked by Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham to serve as a member of the LANTA Board of Directors. As someone who periodically rides LANTA buses and who has seen what quality public transportation can do to for a metropolitan region, I was quick to accept. I was unanimously approved by the Lehigh County Board of Directors and began serving in the early summer.

The timing was quite fortunate as LANTA was about ready to kick off a new era in public transportation in Lehigh County. As you no doubt are aware, the new Allentown Transportation Center (ATC) was close to completion. Through the prior decade (yes, this project took nearly 10 years to plan, fund and construct), LANTA worked with elected officials (including federal, state, county and municipal), the business community and most importantly our riders in designing the ATC and redesigning our routes.

The results have been nothing short of astounding. The ATC has helped us achieve our goals of 1) creating a convenient facility where people coming into Allentown or leaving the city can transfer buses, purchase tickets and park their vehicles (for park and ride purposes) in a clean and safe atmosphere; 2) reduce bus delays caused by traffic by rerouting routes, eliminating redundant stops and centralizing operations; and 3) serving as a “field HQ” for our drivers. According to both our riders and drivers, things have never been smoother.

Recently, the Morning Call noted the loss of business suffered by a few companies located between 7th and 8th Streets on Hamilton Street, who blame their decreasing revenue on LANTA’s decision to remove a bus stop on this road. Please realize that the biggest obstacle to buses arriving on time is traffic, and as someone who drives in Center City every day (remember, I work there), I can attest to the intense volume of traffic on Hamilton Street. Having buses travel on Hamilton Street caused major delays, inconvenienced passenger vehicle traffic, caused a possibly unsafe condition for pedestrians (because of how narrow the street is) and increased idling times (and as such increased the amount of emissions our buses would release). Therefore, the easiest decision LANTA had to make was to cut out a few blocks of Hamilton Street for our buses and reroute that traffic to Walnut and Linden Streets (one block north and south, respectively).

For the record, LANTA removed exactly ONE stop (yup, just one) in that section of Hamilton Street. What the Morning Call failed to mention is that we added three stops in the 700 Block of Walnut Street (just one block south), retained a stop in the Unit Hundred Block of North 8th Street and added a bunch at the ATC, just 2 blocks away.

However as a candidate and a truly concerned citizen, at a public LANTA committee meeting on Tuesday, I suggested that we discuss this situation with leaders from the Allentown Economic Development Corporation and Lehigh Carbon Community College to see if we can better address their needs. Our Executive Director, Armando Greco agreed to this, and we will proceed to discuss this topic with those interested parties.

Let me be clear: since the move off Hamilton Street has been extremely successful for our riders, I will not advocate for the reinstatement of the one stop on Hamilton Street. We will look at stops on the nearby North/South roads and other more creative options, but we must continue to operate in the best interest of our customers.

I am truly excited about the future for LANTA and by extension, the future of public transportation in the Lehigh Valley. Furthermore, I am proud to be a part of this important Authority. For more information, please check out our website at www.lantabus.com.

The new intermodal consolidates three bus stops, not one. (MC, 9/12). Moreover, the elimination of the 8th St stop near hamilton is so close it might just as well have been on Hamilton Street.

38 merchants have signed a petition claiming this removal has hurt their business. 1,800 bus riders have signed a similar petition. There are elderly who complain they simply can't carry their bags the extra distance they must now walk.

And all so you can get to work on time?

This is wrong. And your unwillingness to even consider the people who have been hurt is an abdication of your responsibility as a board member. Do you serve the public or is it Butz and PPL?

The whole point of government is to help the needy, the poor and the elderly. I am outraged that you would not even make an effort to speak to the people who have been hurt.

Mr. Schweyer, Shame on you. You love to blow your own horn, but don't do a damn thing for small and minority-owned businesses that are going out of business thanks to your own stupidity.

Peter, Attached is a comment posted on my blog today. I think you will find it enlightening.

As a consumer of Lanta and downtown businessman, balance is in order. I share many of your [LVRamblings] underlying sentiments; however, let's examine certain issues.

1) The idea of moving traffic off Hamilton--is a freaking canard. Buses go to 9th street. stop. and resume on 7th street. So the cabal stating "we want better traffic flow" is painfully disengenuous. We still have buses on hamilton just not in front of PPL, Butz, Breworks and the new mexican place in the Robert Stern designed PPL (sold to a private group) HQ. The plan was to remove bus peeps from the central redevelopment zone. Another personal example: I visited the Farr's Lofts and the leasing agent proudly stated the "bus people" will no longer be allowed on south 8th street.

2) Consumers---the people likely to visit Lee for a tour of Butzville do not shop at Dollar stores, the myriad sneaker stories or go to the wonderful House of Chen (great dumplings they have and if Mike is cooking on saturdays--u should just ask that he make u something). The demographic for breworks, johnny manana is not a LANTA demographic. And remember the Mayor has constructed 6M into the vivability of that one place.

3)100 Block of 7th Street--business has increased?!!!! Are you kidding? Where-the 7/11? the cuchifrito? There are no businesses in that small area anymore. 7th street deli is boarded up as are most of the stores around there. The most dangerous, drug infested part of allentown is 7-11 and the block anchored by a bar in its middle between 7 and 8th along linden.

4)The transit center--let's face it-it was very much needed and far too late in coming thanks to King Greco. It is clean and has seats which u cant say for many lanta stops. Oh and they actually have schedules posted, unlike most Lanta stops.

Conclusion: The transit center is a major gain. Butz etc investing in downtown is very positive. The p.r and explanation of hamilton traffic as a reason to end routes is false. Either keep the stop at the LCCC (by house of Chen) or take off all bus routes from Hamilton.

What many people are failing to realize is many, if not most, of the people who are waiting for buses downtown are simply passing through.

When my father takes the bus to my house from the east side it is pretty much a straight shot now. The circle through town used to make it somewhat of a chore to take the "A" from Hanover Ave to the West End.

The new transfer center allows riders to pass through town without having to circle (literally in many cases) around the block and get stuck on Hamilton Street or 8th for 10 minutes. If he catches the "E" he can transfer to the "J" right where he gets off instead of running from 9th down to 8th.

I was looking at a few schedules the other day while I was on the bus and it looks like some routes now travel east down Turner St to 7th to the new terminal (someone else mentioned this on another blog too). This seems like it spreads Lanta service throughout more downtown neighborhoods (the system map on Lanta's website does not reflect this so it may need to be updated). That seems like a plus to me.

Buses still stop along every north/south street that crosses Hamilton in town within half a block of Hamilton. If someone doesn't feel like walking from the terminal they can easily transfer for free if they are a senior or if they bought a day pass (everyone does) for the 1.5 block ride.

I sincerely think you guys did a good job planning this.

* MEETING*
PEOPLES FORUM ABOUT LANTA

The recent Lanta bus stop changes have
caused severe hardship to both merchants and
passengers on Hamilton Street. Lanta and The City
of Allentown have shown little sensitivity to this
problem. All candidates for city and county office
will be invited to attend, and/or submit a position on
the Lanta consequences to Hamilton Street. All
Citizens who empathize with the merchants or
passengers are encouraged to attend. The meeting
will be held at Faith Baptist Church, 219 N. 12th St.
(between Turner and Chew Sts.) at 7:00pm on thursday
Oct.18th.. Please come and show your support.
